As the race for AI dominance heats up globally, OpenAI has announced a major update to its popular Chat Completions API with the introduction of “Responses”, a new API that significantly simplifies the process for developers to integrate advanced AI capabilities into their apps. This update, months in the making, is designed to allow developers to execute more complex queries using far less code, making AI more accessible to a broader range of developers—especially those who aren’t experts in large language models (LLMs).

With the new Responses API, developers can reduce the lines of code needed to execute complex tasks. Previously, performing a complex query could require over a hundred lines of code, but with Responses, it can be done in just three. This is aimed at streamlining the process and opening up AI integration to more developers, including those without deep expertise in the field. Consumers will benefit too, as they’ll soon experience AI that is not only faster but also more fluid, capable of handling multimedia content, and able to take actions on their behalf.

“Completions were designed in a world where you could only put text into it, and you could only get text out of it. But now, we have models that can work across multiple mediums. You can input images, get audio output, and even engage in real-time conversations”, according to Fast Company citing Steve Coffey, an engineer at OpenAI.

“The previous API, Completions, was limited to single-turn, text-based interactions. In contrast, the new Responses API supports multi-turn conversations, handles context better, and integrates with various tools”, according to Coffey.

Developers can now take advantage of integrated tools such as web search, code interpreters, and file analysis, enabling AI responses to be grounded in real-time data. Responses also offer a new feature where developers can use one line of code to activate Operator, OpenAI’s agentic tool that can interact with a user’s system, helping to automate tasks and provide a more seamless experience.

These advancements are seen as stepping stones to a future where AI agents can handle more complex tasks on behalf of users, acting autonomously and reducing the need for human input. According to Atty Eleti, an OpenAI engineer, this could lead to the rise of “AI engineers, AI designers, AI auditors,” effectively creating an environment where AI can function as junior interns capable of taking action and solving problems without constant oversight.

For developers, the Responses update simplifies the coding process, improving efficiency and reducing the complexity of building AI apps. While the API is backward-compatible with older systems using the Chat Completions API, OpenAI is confident that most developers will eventually migrate to Responses due to its enhanced capabilities and ease of use.

The global competition is intensifying, particularly as Chinese tech giants like Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent are rapidly advancing their own AI-powered assistant technologies. These companies are pouring resources into creating conversational AI systems that can rival OpenAI’s offerings, with a specific focus on Chinese-language applications, cultural context, and real-time, multi-modal capabilities. These developments are challenging OpenAI to stay ahead of the curve, and the launch of Responses is seen as a direct response to the growing competition.
