On June 27, 1972, A quiet revolution in digital entertainment began when Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney officially founded Atari Inc. in California, with a modest $500 and an ambitious vision. In doing so, the two tech pioneers laid the foundation for what would become a multibillion-dollar industry: video games.

Atari quickly became a driving force in the emerging world of electronic gaming. Its breakout success, Pong, released later that same year, was a table-tennis-inspired arcade game designed by Allan Alcorn at Bushnell’s behest. Installed first in Andy Capp’s Tavern in Sunnyvale, California, the cabinet’s overwhelming popularity turned Pong into a cultural sensation—arcade machines began to line bars and game halls across the United States.

Bushnell, an electrical engineer and gaming enthusiast who once played Spacewar! on mainframe computers at Ampex, saw commercial potential in interactive digital entertainment. His vision—shared and shaped by his collaborator Dabney—turned basement curiosities into global pastimes.

The name “Atari” is borrowed from the Japanese game Go, where it signals a strategic warning akin to “check” in chess. That nod to calculated gameplay was fitting.

By 1977, Atari had launched the Atari 2600—also known as the Atari Video Computer System—introducing interchangeable game cartridges that allowed players to own multiple titles on a single home console. Classics like Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and Adventure would soon follow.

In the early 1980s, Atari was the fastest-growing company in American history, commanding more than 80% of the video game market. But success bred saturation. Poorly received titles—most infamously the E.T. video game—and rising competition from personal computers led to a collapse of the U.S. video game market in 1983, signaling the end of an era.

Yet, Atari’s legacy endures. It not only defined a generation of play but also sparked a creative industry that continues to shape how the world engages with technology.
