In a significant shift for its artificial intelligence (AI) strategy, Google has officially announced that Google Assistant will be retired on smartphones by the end of this year, ushering in the new Gemini AI. This transition was confirmed by Brian Marquardt, the Senior Director of Product Management at Gemini app, in a recent blog post shared via 9to5Google.

Marquardt stated, “Over the coming months, we’re upgrading more users on mobile devices from Google Assistant to Gemini; and later this year, the classic Google Assistant will no longer be accessible on most mobile devices or available for new downloads on mobile app stores.”

For users with devices that do not meet the minimum requirements for Gemini—specifically, at least 2GB of RAM and Android 10 or older—the functionality of Google Assistant will remain unchanged for now. However, the majority of users are expected to receive the upgrade.

Gemini is poised to not only replace Google Assistant on smartphones but also on wearables, as Google prepares for a significant AI enhancement for Wear OS. The new AI, underpinned by generative technology, offers superior conversational abilities and information retrieval compared to its predecessor, and it is gradually adopting the full range of functions previously available through Google Assistant.

While Google Assistant will continue to operate on smart speakers, displays, and televisions for the time being, it is anticipated that these devices will also transition to Gemini in the near future. Devices that connect directly to smartphones—such as car dashboards, tablets, headphones, and smartwatches—are expected to see Gemini upgrades sooner than those in the Nest lineup.

Marquardt also highlighted Gemini’s rapid growth and capabilities, noting that the AI is now available in over 40 languages across more than 200 countries, and has been designed to carry forward the same mission as Google Assistant.

As the rollout progresses, users can expect more updates on Gemini’s capabilities and integration across Google’s device ecosystem in the coming months.

What could it mean for the users?

Replacing Google Assistant with Gemini means several key changes and enhancements for users, Gemini, built on generative AI technology, offers enhanced natural language processing, allowing for more fluid and engaging conversations. Users can expect more accurate responses and a better understanding of context.

Additionally, Gemini aims to incorporate all the tasks that Google Assistant could perform, but with greater efficiency and effectiveness. This includes improved capabilities in information retrieval, task management, and personalized recommendations.

With availability in over 40 languages across more than 200 countries, Gemini provides a more inclusive experience for users around the globe, making it easier to interact in their preferred language. Moreover, Gemini is expected to extend to other devices, including smart speakers, displays, and wearables. This seamless integration promises a more cohesive user experience across all Google products.

As Gemini evolves, users can expect new features and functionalities that may not have been possible with the previous Assistant. This could include advanced AI capabilities such as proactive suggestions and deeper contextual awareness.

For some users, especially those with older devices that do not meet Gemini’s requirements, the transition may be gradual. Google has indicated that users with compatible devices will receive the upgrade, while those with older models will retain Google Assistant temporarily.

While Gemini aims to be user-friendly, there may be a learning curve for users accustomed to Google Assistant. Familiarizing themselves with new commands and features will be essential for maximizing the benefits of the upgrade.
