The liberal daily newspaper in Italy “Il Foglio” has launched a groundbreaking initiative, becoming the world’s first daily publication created entirely using artificial intelligence (AI). This month-long journalistic experiment, spearheaded by founder Giuliano Ferrara, aims to showcase the impact of AI technology in the newsroom.
The inaugural four-page edition is now available both in print and online. Ferrara emphasized the novelty of the initiative, stating, “Everything from writing articles, headlines, quotes, and sometimes even irony is generated by AI.” He noted that the role of journalists in this experiment will be primarily limited to formulating questions for AI tools and interpreting the responses.
This experiment comes at a pivotal time for news organizations worldwide, as they navigate the complexities of integrating AI into their operations. Earlier this month, The Guardian reported that BBC News plans to utilize AI to deliver more personalized content to its audience.
The first edition of Il Foglio AI features a front-page article discussing U.S. President Donald Trump, exploring the “paradox of Italian Trumpists” who simultaneously oppose “cancel culture” while overlooking, or even celebrating, authoritarian behavior from “their idol in the U.S.”
Additionally, the front page includes an editorial titled “Putin, 10 Betrayals,” which critiques Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “20 years of broken promises, violated agreements, and unbelievable rhetoric.”
On the second page, a feature story highlights young Europeans who are increasingly leaving stable relationships. The back page presents letters to the editor, all generated by artificial intelligence, with one notable inquiry asking, “Will AI make humanity worthless in the future?” In its response, the AI humorously noted, “AI is an incredible innovation, but it still doesn’t know how to order a coffee without the wrong amount of sugar.”
Ferrara insists that Il Foglio AI represents a legitimate newspaper, embodying “news, debate, and provocation.” He views it as a testing ground for evaluating the practical applications of artificial intelligence in journalism and its potential effects on daily news production.
“It’s just another Il Foglio, intelligently created. Don’t call it artificial,” Ferrara concluded.
